Unsaturated Polyester Resins for SMC / BMC

SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) resin and BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) resin are widely used in the composite materials industry. SMC resin comes in sheet form, offering excellent dimensional stability and high strength. It is suitable for manufacturing large, complex parts. BMC resin, in bulk form, features good flowability and is cost - effective. Both resins can be molded under heat and pressure, finding applications in automotive parts, electrical enclosures, and construction components due to their durability and versatility.


The characteristic of smc resin and bmc resin:

Molding Forms:SMC resin is presented in sheet form, which is pre - impregnated with reinforcement materials. This form allows for easy handling and molding into large - sized, complex shapes. BMC resin, on the other hand, exists in bulk. Its granular or dough - like consistency enables it to be easily dispensed and processed in various molding operations.


Mechanical Properties:Both SMC resin and BMC resin offer high strength - to - weight ratios. SMC resin, due to its continuous fiber reinforcement in the sheet, often provides enhanced tensile and flexural strength, making it ideal for structural applications. BMC resin, while having a different reinforcement distribution in its bulk form, still delivers good mechanical properties, especially impact resistance.


Molding Process:SMC resin is typically molded using compression molding. The pre - formed sheets are placed in a mold, and heat and pressure are applied to shape the final product. BMC resin can be processed through compression molding as well, but it is also suitable for injection molding because of its better flowability in the bulk state.


Cost - effectiveness:BMC resin is generally more cost - effective in terms of raw material and processing for small - to - medium - sized parts. Its bulk nature allows for easier handling in large - volume production. SMC resin, although more expensive in some cases due to the manufacturing process of the sheets, offers long - term cost savings for large - scale, high - performance applications where its superior mechanical and dimensional stability properties are crucial.
